Durham Choice is a community revitalization initiative led by the Durham Housing Authority and the City of Durham, supported by a $40 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

With redevelopment projects, resident services, community partnerships, and neighborhood improvements taking shape, Durham Choice needed a centralized digital destination to communicate its work and keep stakeholders informed.

The website needed to serve multiple audiences, from residents seeking updates and resources to community partners and organizations following the initiative's progress. It also needed to accommodate substantial amounts of information without becoming difficult to navigate or overwhelming to read.

Our approach began with a simple challenge: how do you make a website containing extensive, detailed information feel approachable?

Rather than allowing the volume of content to dictate the experience, we focused on creating an environment where visitors could comfortably explore and absorb information.

Thoughtful typography, a restrained color palette, clear navigation, and carefully organized content established a visual experience that prioritizes readability without sacrificing personality.

Recognizing the diversity of the communities Durham Choice serves, we also integrated a multilingual translation feature directly into the website's header, allowing visitors to translate the site's content into different languages.

Every decision was guided by the same objective: make important information easier to find, understand, and engage with.

The completed website brings the many dimensions of Durham Choice together within a single, accessible digital environment.

Visitors can explore redevelopment projects and their various phases, learn about neighborhood initiatives, access resident information, and follow the organization's progress through updates and accomplishments.

Dedicated content highlights the organizations and community partners contributing to the initiative, while an integrated calendar helps residents and stakeholders stay informed about upcoming events and activities.

A sitewide language translation feature extends access to residents who prefer to engage with information in languages other than English.

Together, these elements create a central resource connecting residents, partners, and the broader community to the work happening throughout Durham.
